De la familia Todidae, la especie Todus subulatus es endémica de la Isla Hispaniola, en Estados Unidos se refieren a esta especie como Broad-billed Tody mientras en la República Dominicana se le conoce como Barrancolí y Barranquero.
Cuando esta especie es adulta mide entre 11 y 12 centímetros de largo y su peso es de 9.8 gramos.
